Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $312,641)
The Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) proposes to enhance an existing Substance Abuse Recovery Program (SARP) at the women’s correctional facility in Topeka, Kansas. The purpose is to increase the number served, address trauma and gender responsivity as part of the program, expand access to Medication Assisted Treatment, grow a peer mentor training program, and strengthen the fidelity component of the program. The program targets substance abuse among female residents assessed showing need for treatment and high risks in substance use/abuse and recidivism.
In response to escalating substance use and incidents of overdose across all state facilities and in the community, the KDOC proposes to establish a new recovery-oriented living unit for males at the Lansing Correctional Facility in Lansing, KS. This unit is on a campus separate from the rest of the facility and will offer a model similar to SARP, based on cognitive-behavioral interventions, trauma-informed programming and practices, specialized training for all staff, peer mentoring, and a wraparound case management approach.
SARP and the program at Lansing will be delivered using two core evidence-based curricula to address cognitive skills-building through social learning and to address trauma, all in the context of addressing substance use and misuse. Expected outcomes include a model that is gender-responsive and trauma-informed implemented in a specialized unit with a supportive and safe environment.
