Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $65,292)

The purpose of the Nevada Program is to encourage qualified individuals to enter and continue employment as state or local prosecutors and state, local, or federal defenders. The Nevada Model will have the applicants apply directly to the designated agency, which was approved by the governor-designated state administering agency. In Nevada, Governor Sisolak has designated the Director of the Department of Indigent Defense Services to administer the John R. Justice Act on behalf of the State of Nevada. The program shall allow the repayment of a student loan by direct payments on behalf of a borrower to the holder of such loan, in accordance with the Evaluation Process, for any borrower who is employed as a prosecutor or public defender and is not in default on a loan for which the borrower seeks forgiveness. Historically a mathematical formula has been used to determine “Least Able to Pay.” The same tool is going to be edited to remove spousal income.  Applicants will be ranked by “least able to pay.” The administrator hopes this will continue to assist in efforts to attract and retain attorneys into public service roles.
