Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $769,825)

Delaware County, Pennsylvania is in suburban Philadelphia. It has approximately 575,000 residents, a majority of which are either white (64 percent) or Black/African American (22 percent). During the past decade, the drug overdose rate in the county has more than doubled. The applicant seeks to enhance the George W. Hill Correctional Facility’s (GWH) capacity to treat co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health disorders by creating a new treatment provider position. The selected clinician will increase their medical and mental health care capacity. The applicant will also increase staffing inside GWH to support comprehensive case management for those with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders, and to connect those returning to the community with needed treatment and recovery services. GWH staff will conduct an evaluation of their own efforts.
