Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $770,811)

The Division of Scientific Services (DSS) has received 47 percent more DNA cases in FY24 versus FY23. Due to the significant increase, the forensic biology and DNA sections require additional resources to increase processing capacity and decrease turnaround times. The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection requests federal grant funds to support the Division of Scientific Services to increase the capacity of the laboratory and reduce processing turnaround time.

The primary project activities are to use grant funds for supplies and overtime to reduce the number of backlogged forensic cases; to continue staff employment for DNA database processing; to continue to maintenance service of instrumentation used for database processing (3500xl); to purchase, install, validate and service an HID Nimbus Presto to increase the laboratory’s testing capacity; and for two individuals to attend the annual grantees workshop.

Expected outcomes in reduction in the casework backlog by 522 cases. All eligible casework DNA profiles will be entered into the Combined DNA Index System and uploaded to the National DNA Index System, when appropriate. The purchase and implementation of automation will increase the testing capacity of the laboratory.
