The State Crime Laboratory (SCL) in the state of North Carolina applies for and receives an award under the Formula DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction Program each year. The SCL utilizes funding from these awards to achieve the goals and objectives of this program. The specific objectives of the award are to increase the number of Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) eligible samples analyzed in forensic DNA and DNA database laboratories; and reduce the forensic case and DNA database sample turnaround times for CODIS entry. Funding from these awards are used to purchase critical supplies utilized in the testing of forensic casework and DNA database samples; purchase instrumentation to assist in the testing of casework and DNA database samples; and provide training opportunities to the DNA forensic scientists to stay abreast of the latest technologies and trends in the forensic community.

 

The SCL anticipates spending funding to carry out DNA analyses of samples collected under applicable legal authority out for inclusion in CODIS; to carry out DNA analyses of sample from crimes scenes for inclusion in CODIS, and to increase the capacity of the laboratory to carry out DNA analyses of database and/or crime scene samples for inclusion into CODIS.
