Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $292,493)

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office Forensic Science Division (WCSO-FSD) is the agency that is responsible for analyzing forensic evidence associated with criminal investigations for all state and local law enforcement agencies within the northern region of the state of Nevada. The WCSO FSD Biology Unit is responsible for overseeing DNA analysis and subsequent upload of DNA profiles from crime scenes and offender samples to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

This award will be specifically used for the following goal: increase the number of CODIS eligible crime scene samples entered into CODIS.

This goal will be accomplished through the utilization of grant funds for overtime to complete DNA analysis of CODIS eligible cases; the purchase of software licenses used in the interpretation of DNA profiles; and to assist in maintaining our laboratory’s access to CODIS through meeting accreditation requirements for continued education, instrument maintenance, and an external DNA audit.
