Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $900,000)

The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska is a federally recognized tribe located in central Wisconsin. With this funding the tribe will implement the Winnebago Tribal Court Enhancement Project to enhance pretrial tracking, prosecution and probation of cases processed in the Tribal Court for adult and youth offenders. This includes hiring and training new staff; implementing services that address alcohol, other substance abuse, behavioral health, culturally based programming, restoration and importance of family values of the Winnebago Tribe for adults and youth case plans; and contracting with an attorney to review and update the Winnebago Tribal Code.
The project will offer services culturally designed to address the gaps in services for the tribe's adult and youth offenders involved in the Tribal Justice System. Collaborative partners will be involved in the planning, service delivery, and evaluation of the project. Services will assist offenders in making good decisions that have positive long-term impact.
