The Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians is a federally recognized tribe located in Cochella, California. The tribe will use this funding to address escalating public safety challenges through innovative solutions rooted in evidence-based strategies and cultural values. Key public safety issues identified include substance misuse, driving under influence, illegal dumping, trespassing, property damage, and theft. Recognizing the interconnected nature of these challenges, the tribe emphasizes justice system-wide strategic planning to address root causes comprehensively. Strategic planning efforts involve collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including tribal leadership, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations. By synthesizing data, community input, and best practices, the tribe aims to develop actionable strategies to maximize the impact of public safety initiatives. Restorative justice principles are integral to the strategic plan, emphasizing accountability, victim services, and community healing. Proposed initiatives include family group conferences, victim-offender mediation, and circle sentencing, aligning with Native American traditions, and addressing historically marginalized communities' needs. The tribal council's involvement ensures alignment with tribal priorities and values, while a core planning team facilitates the development of the strategic plan. By integrating evidence-based strategies with cultural values and fostering collaboration, the Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians aims to create a safer, more resilient tribal community rooted in justice, healing, and accountability.
