Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $899,802)

The Northern Cheyenne Tribe (NCT) is a federally recognized tribe located in southeastern Montana. With this funding the tribe will develop a Restorative Justice/ Tribal Reentry Program with a goal to enhance rehabilitation services to Northern Cheyenne inmates by providing access to resources available for substance abuse treatment, personal and family development, and furthering individual life skills to reduce recidivism to the adult population. The primary activities of the program are contained within the following objectives: NCT will develop at least three formal partnerships with local, state, and/or federal agencies to increase the capacity of our Tribal Court to develop and implement the NCT Restorative Justice Program; and  NCT will provide culturally appropriate restorative justice services (e.g., substance abuse treatment and recovery support; life skills; parenting classes; behavioral health support) to at least 40 individuals per year who are incarcerated or reentering the Northern Cheyenne community. Tribal members (and their families) currently incarcerated or reentering the community are the intended beneficiaries of this program.
