Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $1,110,903)

The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, a federally recognized tribe in Miami-Dade County, Florida, will use funding to update the Miccosukee Police Department Headquarters, create safe areas for community events and gatherings, and set up a centralized emergency operations center. As a result of the worsening state of the police building, the Tribe’s entire agency was obliged to move to temporary modular trailers for daily operations. Regrettably, these provisional facilities are insufficient to house all agency divisions, leading to a substantial dispersal of our personnel. This division necessitates the dispersion of different departments within the agency to function from distinct locations, spanning a distance of 25 miles and encompassing four distinct sites. Consequently, providing services to our community becomes significantly challenging as a result of this physical separation. Applicants who wish to work for our agency face logistical challenges because they are required to travel a distance of 25 miles from our temporary Police Administration building in order to meet with the background investigator for interviews and hiring procedures. This operational division has a detrimental effect on the efficiency and cohesion of the Tribe’s agency’s operations. The plan aims to repurpose the current Miccosukee clinic into a new police station to address safety concerns and improve communication infrastructure. Specific goals have been set, including renovating and moving the police station to a new location within two years and shifting all activities to the new building. This initiative aims to establish a safer and more efficient environment for both law enforcement personnel and community members.
