Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $150,000)

The Mechoopda Indian Tribe (MIT) of Chico Rancheria is a federally recognized tribe located in Butte County, California with offices in Chico, California. With this funding, the MIT will develop a tribal justice strategic plan which will serve as the guiding document for the future implementation of a Tribal Justice System within the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria. With the recent opening of its gaming enterprise and the continued growth of the community, MIT is looking at the future of the tribal community and its evolving needs. Currently, MIT does not have a court system or law enforcement personnel. It relies on the communities of the City of Chico, Butte County, and State of California to help enforce the laws and regulations for our people. The Tribal Justice Strategic Plan will help establish the process to grow its law enforcement and court systems to help protect its tribal members, its enterprises, businesses conducting transactions on its lands, and more.
