Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $865,735)

The Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana is a federally recognized tribe located on the Chitimacha Reservation, adjacent to the community of Charenton in rural coastal Louisiana. With this funding the Tribe improve efficiency and coordination among tribal and nontribal justice system partners. The Chitimacha Tribe will use this funding to establish the probation officer as a Chitimacha Tribal Courts staff position, add an experienced detective to the Chitimacha Police Department to build justice system capacity to investigate crime, and host a Tribal Advocacy Training to help non-tribal partners work with the Chitimacha Tribe and tribal members.
