Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $628,156)

The Village of Iliamna is a federally recognized tribe located in Iliamna, Alaska. No roads connect the region to the outside; all travel is by small plane or boat. Iliamna is a subregional hub community. With this funding, the Village of Iliamna will explore, research, and plan a Tribal Court to meet the unique needs of our remote tribal community and then implement the plan making the Tribal Court an integral part of our community justice system. Due to complex jurisdictional issues, we have been unable to form a tribal police department and we intend the Iliamna Tribal Court to help reduce crime by integrating effective cultural practices into sentencing and intervention and partnering with their Victims of Crime program. Iliamna is connected by a 4.5-mile road to the Alaska Native Village of Newhalen with whom they share an airport, post office and a school. Iliamna has 111 people and Newhalen has a population of 181. The Village of Iliamna has enacted a local option law prohibiting the sale of alcohol; Newhalen does not have this law. The Village of Iliamna intends this project to help deter crime.
