Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $300,000)

The City of Long Beach, New York, is applying to the Department of Justice (DOJ) Rural and Small Department Violent Crime Reduction Program to combat rising violent and drug related crimes within their community. The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) strives to provide the highest quality law enforcement dedicated to the protection of life and property for our residents, businesses, and visitors. LBPD provides all facets of law enforcement – from patrol functions to full investigative services – but is not equipped with an operational narcotics division. As such, the City is looking to utilize DOJ funds for the hiring of one new detective to support the creation of a narcotics unit within our existing detective division. The City has not had a narcotics unit in approximately 5 years and a new detective would serve as an invaluable asset for the LBPD and the Long Beach community.
