Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $136,094)

The Western District of Oklahoma's 2024 Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) strategy aims to reduce violent crime through targeted initiatives and enhanced prosecution. This project will fund a Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) to support three local PSN initiatives: Operation 922, Operation Shots Fired, and Project Switch Off. These initiatives focus on combating domestic violence, targeting shooters, and addressing the illegal use of machinegun conversion devices, respectively. The primary geographical focus will be the Oklahoma City metro area, including Oklahoma and Cleveland Counties. The project will enhance the prosecution of violent offenders, particularly those involved in domestic violence and firearms-related crimes. By leveraging federal resources and fostering collaboration between local and federal law enforcement agencies, the Western District of Oklahoma aims to significantly impact violent crime rates and improve community safety.

The SAUSA will coordinate with state and federal prosecutors, screen and investigate domestic violence and firearms cases for both federal and local prosecution, sign federal complaints and search warrants, present to federal grand juries, and facilitate evidence entry into National Integrated Ballistic Information Network. Key objectives include prosecuting violent offenders related to the three initiatives, participating in regular meetings with law enforcement partners, screening eligible cases for federal prosecution, and maintaining statistical data for reporting purposes.

The United States Attorney's Office will oversee the prosecution of cases referred by agencies across the district, ensuring the subgrantee contributes to the overall violent crime reduction strategy. The Oklahoma District Attorneys Council will serve as the fiscal agent, handling subgrant drawdowns, federal reporting, and monitoring compliance with Department of Justice guidelines.
