Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $78,828)
The Northern District of Mississippi consists of 37 rural counties. As a part of its Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, the Northern District of Mississippi currently has just one designated PSN site, but works closely with state, local and federal partners across our District to combat violent crime. Our current PSN focus area is in the City of Greenville, which is located in the Mississippi Delta and is a historic PSN focal point in our District since 2002. Due to steep increase in violent crime and requests from local law enforcement for assistance, we are in the process of exploring a second potential PSN site in Clarksdale, Mississippi which was a previous PSN site from 2002-2012.
Because the violent crime problem in our District is largely intertwined with drug trafficking and gang activity, our United States Attorney led task forces have traditionally attacked gun crime across our District and in our target areas in conjunction with drug and Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigations. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,, Firearms, and Explosives agents have been assigned on a full-time basis to each of the Drug Enforcement Administration multi-agency task forces conducting these investigations to ensure that violent gun crimes are fully investigated and that those responsible are prosecuted. The USAO is working closely with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and local law enforcement such as the Greenville Police Department Special Operations Unit to combat drug and gun crime.
This District will use funds to further assist our state, local and community partners in ongoing PSN efforts. Funds will support proactive law enforcement efforts, community prevention and intervention, training and community education.
