Byrne JAG is a general-purpose criminal justice/substance abuse federal formula grant. In Iowa, Byrne-JAG grants are generally utilized by state and local agencies to improve the criminal justice system. The program places an emphasis on breaking the cycle of addiction and crime, combating violence, holding offenders accountable, enhancing law enforcement initiatives, redirecting low risk offenders, and supporting adjudication.
In SFY 2025 ODCP awarded competitive grants to 22 state and local agencies, with 82% of the State award passed through to local units of government. Byrne JAG funds via ODCP have a multiplying effect in Iowa. Programs supported in the current fiscal year include:

Youth development
Deflection/Diversion to Treatment
Human Trafficking
Technology Improvement
Alternatives to incarceration
