Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $8,487,623)
The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) has demonstrated a strong commitment to meeting the unique needs of those who come into contact with the criminal justice system, with an emphasis on state and local programming, technical assistance, equity, and research support to prevent or reduce crime and violence through the use of annual formula Byrne JAG funding. DCJS plans to enhance its current capacity through the implementation of community lead programs, support for law enforcement, and research and evaluation by utilizing funds administered under this grant. The improvement of service capacity and/or establishment of new services to address jurisdiction specific challenges will be accomplished through a collaborative partnership with counties, law enforcement agencies, and local community-based organizations across the state.
Expected outcomes of the grant include:
Identify the unique challenges and unmet needs of local jurisdictions, including law enforcement.
Support the implementation of programs, technical assistance and/or research to address those identified unmet needs.
Support implementation of programs to reduce crime and violence within communities across the State.
Increase access to justice, advance system reform and reduce crime by funding innovative, holistic criminal justice initiatives that advance the safety of New Yorkers and are responsive to culturally diverse populations and providing opportunities for initiatives to become evidence based and expanding upon them with future State funding.
Effective and informed programming can change the trajectory of the lives of people in a positive and meaningful way. Federal performance measures will be collected to measure attainment of project goals.
