South Dakota's PREA Reallocation Project

The South Dakota Department of Corrections (SDDOC) was identified at a prior audit as needing to improve staff, volunteer, and contractor training as well as duties associated with first responders, medical, and mental health care professionals. This award will assist the SDDOC in providing training and tools for staff to best navigate PREA incidents and be confident in their abilities. There is also a need to update visual aids such as signage, pamphlets, and PREA response cards to ensure that all staff and offenders have access to resources in a manner that that accommodates their reading abilities, language, and sensory impairments. These work products serve as reminders of standards and avenues for assistance which are a necessity for both offenders and staff.
