Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $614,000)

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) is seeking funding through Category 1 of the FY24 BJA Body-Worn Camera Policy and Implementation Program (BWCPIP) to implement a comprehensive Body-Worn Camera (BWC) program, which involves upgrading its current equipment to the latest BWC technology. This upgrade is critical to enhancing operational efficiency, transparency, accountability, and public trust within the KCK community. The new BWCs will come equipped with advanced features, including GPS location, live streaming, "watch me" notifications, two-way communication, cloud storage, automatic activation via signal technology, longer battery life, and real-time upload and transcription capabilities. All of these features are vital to advancing KCKPD’s mission of maintaining public safety, increasing officer safety,  and building trust within the community of Kansas City, Kansas. The KCKPD is committed to leveraging these new capabilities to enhance its operational efficiency, accountability, and overall effectiveness in law enforcement and is looking forward to being a part of the FY24 BWCPIP grant project.
