Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $1,000,000)

The Native Village of Port Heiden (NVPH), which is a federally recognized tribe and traditionally underserved Alaska Native community in Alaska, will expand its existing Port Heiden Wellness Program to reduce high risk behaviors and the use of opioids, stimulants, and other substances within the boundaries of the village while increasing cultural connectedness through direct service provision. The expansion will  increase the ability of the Wellness Program to provide effective and high-quality opioid and drug prevention and harm reduction services, by hiring program staff dedicated to opioid prevention and harm reduction and developing and implementing a data collection system to ensure appropriate data is gathered for required reporting and program operations.

The NVPH Wellness Center will provide access to individual teletherapy sessions, as well as providing group cultural healing/therapeutic activities to 100 community members, including 25 youth each year to prevent and reduce the use of opioids, stimulants and other substances. The project will also increase collaboration among local and regional service providers and with State law enforcement; provide community outreach and education; survey the community to learn more about existing perceptions of substance misuse and unmet needs for prevention, harm reduction, treatment and recovery in NVPH; and develop and implement a data collection system to ensure appropriate data is gathered for required reporting and program operations.
