Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $22,838)

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office is committed to enhancing its forensic capabilities through the implementation of the Crime Lite Auto Kit and Crime Lite Lab Arm in its newly established DNA laboratory. This cutting-edge technology will enable the lab to efficiently examine trace evidence and biological fluids such as blood, semen, urine, and saliva which are essential elements in solving complex crimes.

The utilization of the Crime Lite Auto Kit and Crime Lite Lab Arm will allow the Sheriff's Office to process forensic evidence more efficiently and with greater control, ensuring that DNA samples selected for analysis are directly relevant to investigations. This enhancement will not only elevate the quality and speed of evidence examination but also improve investigative outcomes, making our community safer.

The Sheriff's Office DNA Lab will also serve as a vital resource for surrounding law enforcement agencies, including Santa Cruz Police Department, Capitola Police Department, Scotts Valley Police Department, Watsonville Police Department, and others. The lab will provide the underserved communities, survivors and victims with faster case resolutions by providing a quicker turnaround times.

The anticipated outcome of this project is to equip the DNA lab with advanced light source technology, ensuring the swift collection and examination of biological evidence. This will reduce the backlog of untested cases, expedite the identification of suspects, and minimize delays for community members awaiting justice.
