JAG Formula Funding Request for City of Redwood City, California’s Virtual Reality De-escalation Training Supplies

The City of Redwood City proposes to update and upgrade its Police Department's de-escalation training by updating its virtual reality (VR) training system with tools for VR training in TASER, handgun and Less Lethal Launchers use. These tools, simulated weapons with laser capacity to register use, will be incorporated into the Department's existing RECON VR training program, purchased in 2015, with replacements for worn tools, additional tools and, in the case of Less Lethal Launchers, new tools necessary to train on all the resources officers now have access to in the field. These tools will assist in teaching the Department's officers in use of the appropriate force, and provide the opportunity for observation and feedback to ensure best practices of the officers in use of force in the field. This program will benefit the entire Redwood City community in improved policing practices and a safer community.
