Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $14,467)

The County of Chesterfield will use JAG funds for a new camera system at our detention center. Our detention center was built in 1973 and we are in desperate need of a new jail. While we have had readings for a new jail’s land, we are, at bare minimum, four to five years away from even starting the process. It is also our intent to move this camera system as part of the new jail’s infrastructure, so this system we’re requesting would last more than a few years at this detention center. This funding would be a long-term investment. We also believe this falls into three key areas of priority: Prevention and Prosecution of Hate Crimes, Enhancing Justice System Reform Strategies, and Violent Crime Reduction, which we will demonstrate in the proposal. We also believe this would be a project related to preventing, detecting, seizing, and/or stopping the presence and use of contraband cellphones within correctional facilities.
