Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $14,646)

The Sanford Police Department is committed to enhancing operational efficiency, situational awareness, and officer safety through the use of cutting-edge technology. In alignment with this mission, we propose the acquisition of Toughbook computers for all command vehicles within the department. Toughbooks are rugged, portable, and highly durable devices designed to function in extreme conditions, making them an ideal fit for the dynamic and often unpredictable environments in which our officers operate.  The introduction of Toughbook computers will significantly improve the department’s capabilities.

Toughbooks will allow for real-time communication between command vehicles, dispatch, and other officers in the field. The devices’ secure networks will enable live data sharing, GPS tracking, and video feeds, improving command decision-making and response times during critical incidents.

Commanders will have instant access to databases, incident reports, and criminal records, streamlining investigations and ensuring more informed and immediate responses to situations. This will reduce the time spent returning to the station for data input or retrieval.

Toughbooks will provide commanders with robust tools for incident reporting, including integrated software for managing scene logistics, handling evidence, and coordinating with other agencies. This will increase efficiency in managing emergencies, traffic accidents, and large-scale events.

Built to withstand harsh conditions such as rain, extreme temperatures, and rough handling, Toughbooks offer unmatched reliability in the field. Their long battery life and durable design will ensure consistent performance during extended shifts and critical deployments. With the ability to access critical data and communicate seamlessly, commanders can make quicker, better-informed decisions that enhance both their safety and the safety of the community. These devices will streamline tasks, allowing officers to focus more on public service rather than administrative duties.

The proposed acquisition represents a long-term investment in technology that will modernize our fleet, improve operational outcomes, and provide greater value to the citizens of Sanford. The department seeks funding to procure five Toughbooks to outfit all command vehicles, ensuring that every commander is equipped with the tools necessary to carry out their duties effectively and safely. By embracing this advanced technology, the Sanford Police Department aims to further its goal of delivering responsive, data-driven, and efficient law enforcement services.
