Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $24,000)

The Roanoke County Sheriff's Office will use JAG funds to implement a bicycle safety program aimed at promoting public safety and community engagement. The purpose of this project is to provide community-based bicycle safety training, with deputies delivering education on traffic laws, safe cycling practices, and proper use of bicycle equipment. These efforts will help reduce accidents, encourage safer transportation habits among cyclists of all ages, and build positive relationships between the community and law enforcement.
The project will include sending deputies to specialized bike patrol school, ensuring they are equipped to lead bicycle safety efforts both in the classroom and during community events. Deputies will be outfitted with bicycles and necessary safety equipment, enabling them to actively engage in hands-on training sessions. Additionally, bicycles will be purchased for the community to use during these training sessions and other public events, fostering accessibility to safe cycling.
Key deliverables for this project include the completion of deputy training, the procurement of equipment, and the rollout of community-based training programs. The intended beneficiaries are the residents of Roanoke County, with a focus on both youth and adults who participate in cycling as a mode of transportation or recreation. The program aims to enhance overall traffic safety and promote positive interactions between law enforcement and the public. The service area for this project will cover Roanoke County, with training sessions being offered at schools, civic groups, and community events. The Sheriff's Office will directly oversee the program.
