Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $13,005)
The City of Rosemead proposes to implement the School Resource Officer Program at a local high school. The purpose is to apply a community-oriented policing model at the local high school by placing a trained law enforcement officer within the educational environment to support students in prevention and early intervention of involvement in life-altering activities that may affect their future such as, the use of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco, along with peer pressure, graffiti/vandalism, and gang activity. Project activities include assigning one full-time officer to the local high school to serve as a liaison to contracted law enforcement services. Additionally, the officer will serve as a resource for students, parents, teachers, and administration regarding law enforcement issues, and a link to other service agencies that provide preventive and counseling services within the school district. Expected outcomes include the success of preventative measures to address campus safety and support conflict resolution to reduce the number of adolescents involved in the criminal justice system.
