Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $63,243)

The city of Yakima will use the JAG funds to fund police overtime for emphasis patrols in designated areas that suffer from fear of crime issues. Place officers in areas of higher density of population, which increases the propensity for criminal activity. More officers act as a deterrent and can respond to criminal activity quicker. The city will also purchase equipment and e-bikes for the police department. Electronic bikes have proven to allow officers to ride faster and longer distances with less effort. Officers on bicycles in an urban area allow them to react quickly and patrol more area. Electric bicycles are extremely quiet allowing officers to operate more effectively especially in areas of high foot traffic. Yakima County will use their JAG funds to purchase communication equipment for the crisis support unit. The equipment will be replacing equipment that is nearly 15 years old. The equipment allows specialty trained units to communicate during dynamic incidents.
