Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $69,882)

This project addresses the safety concerns of law enforcement and emergency service providers when attending crime scenes. There is escalating violent crime rates in Las Cruces, New Mexico, including a 114% increase in homicides and a 57% rise in aggravated assaults in 2023. This project aims to enhance community safety by focusing on two critical areas: the well-being of emergency responders and the protection of families residing in high-crime neighborhoods.

We propose the development of targeted resources and training for law enforcement, emphasizing the urgent need for improved personnel protective equipmen to safeguard officers and emergency responders exposed to the heightened risk of firearm presence in crime scenes. This initiative seeks to create a safer environment, reduce the prevalence of violent crime against first responders, and ensure the protection of those dedicated to maintaining public safety in Las Cruces.
