Prince George's County, Maryland, hereinafter the County, is a sister suburb to the District of Columbia. The County has an estimated 967,201 citizens and residents. Due to the proximity to the District of Columbia, the County suffers the same ills in crime. Since the borders are close many of the perpetrators cross the borders to avoid apprehension and/or incarceration. It is for this reason the jurisdictions have collaborated on many crime initiative(s), to include but not limited to, information-sharing of its criminal databases. However, due to the constant upgrade of technology, it is essential that these databases are updated and maintained at the optimum¬ level.
Prince George's County has six public safety agencies - Police Department, Fire/EMS Department, Department of Corrections, Homeland Security, Sheriff Department, and the State’s Attorney Office - that play an integral part in its criminal justice system. All agencies are under the auspices of the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (DCAO) for Public Safety. The DCAO reports to the County’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), who reports to the County Executive who is the elected official responsible for the governing of the County.
Under the FY 24 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program: Local Solicitation, the Prince George's Public Safety Initiative will focus on providing continuing support for the agencies' mental health programs, prosecution/courts diversionary programs and equipment upgrades. Four of the six agencies will use the funding for continuation of its employee wellness programs while the Police will purchase surveillance equipment and the State's Attorney Office will provide case management for diversionary offenders.
With the FY 24 JAG grant, Prince George's County, Maryland's Public Safety Initiative will be able to focus on the health and welfare of its public safety employees ensuring their wellness during the routine and critical incident stress that comes with the profession.
