Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $398,295)

The City of Austin and subrecipient, Travis County, request $398,295 in FY24 JAG funding. Training and equipment projects will be implemented to address crime through evidence-based programming and practices; and, to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the criminal justice system. Specifically, City funds will be purposed for training (in- and out-of-state as well as locally hosted). Trainings will focus on a variety of topics that will aid APD sworn and civilian personnel in appropriately and effectively responding to emergency and non-emergency incidents. Topics will include violent and property crime prevention, leadership, bias, and forensics, among others. It is estimated that 350 employees will receive training directly. County subaward funds will be purposed for the purchase of public safety equipment (speed and message sign trailers, thermal monoculars, leg irons, and other critical safety items). The equipment will enhance local law enforcement services by improving public communication, aiding in the detection of suspects, conducting search and rescue, and restraining combative individuals.
