The purpose of the Leon Sullivan Way Safety Initiative is a public safety upgrade with the electrical, cabling, installation and other cost of enhancing exterior lighting, adding exterior cameras and monitoring and reporting capability to public safety officials along public walkways, streets and alleys. The area served is along and adjacent to Leon Sullivan Way from Quarrier Street to Kanawha Boulevard. Primary activities in this area are from three churches, a grade school, a high school, two day cares, an after school care program, scouting programs, three youth sports facilities and existing senior housing and repurposing of office buildings to residential housing. The intended beneficiaries are the public, residents and users of the churches, schools and youth services who will all benefit from enhanced public safety. The City of Charleston is expected to benefit as Leon Sullivan Way is a gateway entrance to this part of the city from the interstate highway. Expected outcomes are greater use of the surrounding services, a reduction in crime, traffic safety, repurposing of more buildings in the area for residential housing.
