Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $2,000,000)
The City of Montgomery proposes to implement the Community-Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative to lower the rate of violent crimes by 10%. The purpose will be to address the rising violent crime rate in Montgomery, AL, as well as integrate both street and hospital-linked interventions into a coherent program and strategic plan in the downtown, northern, western, and southern areas of the city. The project activities will include nurturing community safety through physical environment improvements; neighborhood walks and community events to support meaningful resident involvement; employing interventionists to help identify and engage potential shooters on the street; creating economic avenues to alleviate financial hardship; providing counseling services to survivors and those at highest risk to commit or become a victim of violence; and establishing a steering committee to promote multilateral collaboration and provide oversight. Expected outcomes include increased evidence-based programs to reduce violent crimes that result in the loss of life, reduce violent crimes that result in serious injury, increase community engagement for evidence-based programs, increase collaboration between stakeholders, increase opportunities for community violence survivors, and build capacity for community violence intervention programs in Montgomery.
