Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $400,000)

The Bishop Paiute Tribe will enhance the Tribal Youth Healing to Wellness Court (TYHWC) to address substance abuse issues among Tribal youth using traditional practices that promote healing, wellness, and resilience. The goal is to refocus the TYHWC on traditional Tribal cultural activities, designating program phases with the “Four Medicines,” aligning with Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s 8 Dimensions of Wellness, and using the traditional “Medicine Wheel.” The enhancement will increase youth connectedness with their cultural identity by building partnerships with elders, mentors, and cultural/traditional knowledge keepers. The TYHWC program will promote healthy life choices and sobriety, improve academic achievement, increase self-esteem, and reduce delinquent behaviors.
