The Tribe will initiate a 12 -month Tribal Youth Planning Grant aimed at developing a Juvenile Delinquency Prevention, Intervention, Treatment and After Care strategic plan to serve the youth of the Sicangu Oyate. The Tribe will utilize a strengths-based approach assessing Tribal programs, entities, and nonprofit organizations and the services they provide to Tribal youth. This effort will place emphasis on planning and creating a space and time for what an effective Tribal youth program vision would look like. The Tribal youth program will focus on bringing healing to the community and to the youth by utilizing evidence-based interventions that are strength based and intersecting them with traditional Indigenous cultural approaches. Emphasis will be placed on prevention, but also an attempt to gather data that support treatment from substance misuse and mental health in the community. The project goal is to create a planning team to assist in the 10 planning meetings focused on the health and well-being of the youth in the Tribe. Project objectives are to develop a cohesive planning team aimed at coordinating a team consisting of Tribal programs, key stakeholders, and Tribal youth, and have 10 meetings within the year to develop SMART goals. The Tribe will concentrate on planning prevention strategies to reduce the impact recidivism, substance misuse, mental health, truancy, and delinquency have on Tribal youth and the community.
