Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $150,601)

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.

The Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority will use FY07 PSN funds to continue the Central District's established cooperation among law enforcement agencies and to maximize the use of available resources to target high-risk offenders. The DRAGUN (Drug and Gun) Units of the targeted areas of Springfield, Decatur, Kankakee, Peoria, and the Quad Cities will submit proposals for this purpose. Additionally, the District will allocate remaining funding from a former research partner to a to-be-identified research partner that will undertake an assessment of the crime analysis capacity of law enforcement agencies throughout the District and develop a plan to strengthen agency capacity.
