Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $416,205)

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.

The New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety will utilize FY07 PSN funding to address the District's goal of reducing gun violence through an enhanced gun prosecution strategy in the target areas of Camden, Cumberland, Essex, Hudson, Mercer, and Union Counties.

Through the funding of six Assistant Prosecutors, the primary objective of the District's program will be to: 1) use information from strategic gun investigators to further gang prosecutions; 2) bring criminal racketeering and continuing criminal enterprise charges against gang members in leadership positions; 3) build cases under federal and state law against gun traffickers and compliant licensees; 4) continue the deployment of six assistant prosecutors to expedite the prosecution of weapons offenses; and 5) increase the number of investigations, arrests, and prosecutions of individuals involved in the use of trafficking of firearms.
