Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $290,937)
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety ' Office of Justice Programs will utilize its FY07 PSN funding to reduce firearms violence in the District. Funding will be used to: 1) Conduct a statewide community outreach campaign through the use of broadcast media and community education efforts promoting the principles of Projects Ceasefire and Sentry, which both aim to increase awareness and education of the dangers of firearm violence; 2) Conduct crime analysis and provide other research support to assist the Ceasefire/PSN task forces in their planning efforts; 3) Target perpetrators of crimes involving the use of a firearm through specialized investigation and multi-agency cooperation; 4) Provide courses to adults and juveniles on firearm safety and laws regarding firearm-related offenses and provide prevention and education programs that aim to reduce juvenile-related gun violence; and 5) Increase the amount of firearms evidence analyzed through increased coordination and resources.
