Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $92,077)
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.
The United Way of Southwest Alabama will use their Fiscal Year 2007 PSN funds to attack the gun crime problem in the Southern District with a three-pronged approach of training, enforcement and prosecution, and re-entry. A competitive funding process will result in awards that reflect the following District goals: 1) continue to maintain strong relationships with local law enforcement, which will allow for successful prosecution of federal firearms cases; 2) continue to track and report crime data for offenses involving firearms in the City of Mobile and other areas targeted in order to assess the District's needs and accomplishments; and 3) further efforts to integrate re-entry programs and notification for prohibited persons.
