Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $205,795)
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.
The Texas Office of the Attorney General will use their FY07 PSN funds to continue their successful prevention and enforcement activities to combat the high number of gun cases brought to the Eastern District's courts every year. The Plano Police Department will fund a NIBIN Technician, a Firearms Examiner, and firearms-related training and supplies in order to increase the number of gun crimes solved and criminals convicted by having more ballistics information in the NIBIN database. The Inspire, Encourage, Achieve (IEA) program will fund a Program Director, a Licensed Social Worker, an After-School Activities Coordinator, tutors, and art therapy and organized sports supplies in order to expose youth to positive peer groups through participation in art therapy and structured recreational activities, which will be used in conjunction with counseling and case management to identify triggers to anger and to develop alternative ways of coping.
