Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $439,902)

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.

The Governor's Office of Emergency Services will use their FY07 PSN funds to combat firearm-related violence in the Eastern District of California. The District will fund the following initiatives: 1) The Fresno and San Joaquin County District Attorney's Offices will continue their successful juvenile prosecution programs; 2) The Sacramento County District Attorney's Crime Lab will fund a crime analyst and forensic expert in order to increase the Lab's ability to test fire confiscated weapons, input ammunition into the IBIS system, and reduce the backlog of cases; and 3) The District will sponsor the Eastern District Gun and Gang Violence Reduction Conference.
