Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $901,319)

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.

The Governor's Office of Emergency Services will use their FY07 PSN funds to target an increase in violent street gangs and gun violence in Los Angeles County and the City of Santa Ana. The Central District of California will fund the following initiatives: 1) Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will expand on its successful vertical prosecution model through the funding of a Gun Resource Prosecutor who will handle firearm-related cases in the Hardcore Gang Division; 2) Los Angeles Probation Department will hire staff to conduct compliance checks on high-risk probationers through the Developing Increased Safety Through Arms Recovery (DISARM) Program; 3) Los Angeles Police Department will fund a detective to trace guns and utilize the tracing information to build cases against gang members who illegally use or possess a firearm; 4) Los Angeles IMPACT, a collaboration of 27 police departments and state and county agencies, will fund overtime and equipment for investigations; 5) The Santa Ana Police Department will fund their Santa Ana Police Athletic Activity League (SAPAAL), a crime prevention program to create trust and understanding between at-risk youth and law enforcement; and 6) The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office will fund a vertical prosecutor for gang members with firearms and narcotics violations in the City of Los Angeles.
