Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $52,587)
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.
The U.S. Virgin Islands will use their FY07 PSN funds to target a rising gun violence rate that is especially affecting the youth population. In order to address this problem, the following goals and objectives have been established: 1) to focus an aggressive anti-gun violence media campaign toward the youth of the District; 2) to enhance the effectiveness of the Virgin Islands Police/ATF Gun Squads through use of a gun hotline; 3) to better incorporate community- and faith-based groups into the enforcement and media strategies; 4) to improve coordination between PSN projects and schools, law enforcement, and the business community; and 5) to reduce gun violence among the youth of the District.
