Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $148,512)

This award is made under the FY 2007 Tribal Courts Assistance Program and it supports the development, implementation, enhancement, and continuing operation of tribal justice systems. Allowable elements under the program may include, but are not limited to: establishing a core structure for a tribal court, improving case management, training court personnel, acquiring additional equipment and/or software, enhancing prosecution and indigent defense, supporting probation diversion and alternative sentencing programs, accessing services, focusing on juvenile services and multi disciplinary protocols for child physical and sexual abuse, and structuring intertribal or tribal appellate systems.

The purpose of the Little Traverse Bay Bands (LTBB) of Odawa Indians Tribal Court Assistance Project is to expand and enhance effective operation of the LTBB Court system over the 24-month project period. The project objectives are to: 1) increase the knowledge and expertise of the Tribal Court Judiciary and Tribal Court staff in their respective roles and responsibilities through attending and completing court related training; 2) improve court hearings and record-keeping through the purchase and implementation of digital evidence presentation system; 3) enhance peacemaking court (as part of the LTBB Court system) through facilitator/mediation training and development of peacemaking processes for cases other than juvenile-related cases; and 4) enhance the LTBB Tribal Court information system/court database and software upgrades for onsite training.
