This award is made under the FY 2007 Tribal Courts Assistance Program and it supports the development, implementation, enhancement, and continuing operation of tribal justice systems. Allowable elements under the program may include, but are not limited to: establishing a core structure for a tribal court, improving case management, training court personnel, acquiring additional equipment and/or software, enhancing prosecution and indigent defense, supporting probation diversion and alternative sentencing programs, accessing services, focusing on juvenile services and multi disciplinary protocols for child physical and sexual abuse, and structuring intertribal or tribal appellate systems.

The Skokomish Tribal Court will use the grant funds to improve court productivity. The goals of the project are: 1) to increase capacity to handle the caseload, which will be accomplished by the implementation of a case flow management system; 2) to implement a better records management system to better handle data management tasks; 3) to strengthen the court staff through training to increase staff skills and practices; and 4) to conduct a tribal justice review and analysis in order to develop a comprehensive development and sustainability plan.
