Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $100,000)

The purpose of the Capital Case Litigation Initiative (CCLI) is to provide high-quality training and technical assistance on death penalty issues to judges and attorneys who litigate death penalty cases. This program focuses on ensuring quality representation and reliable jury verdicts. The goals of CCLI are to increase the number of capital litigation attorneys trained in death penalty cases, and to ensure that defense counsel, prosecutors, and judges have the most up-to-date and comprehensive information available to them on death penalty litigation.

The Superior Court of Maricopa County will partner with the Arizona Supreme Court to build upon current training efforts and move to Phase III of its capital case management training. This phase will focus on a series of training events for defense attorneys, judges, and prosecutors. Trainings will be delivered in Maricopa County at the Arizona Supreme Court's training facility. This venue accommodates 113 participants, has state-of-the-art audio video equipment, and staffs a team to offer technical and logistic support. The training will be a continuation of the efforts already in place to address the complexity associated with capital cases.
