Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $199,138)
The Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program is designed to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments in developing and establishing drug courts for substance-abusing adult and juvenile offenders. Drug court programs funded by the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program are required by law to target nonviolent offenders. The Program supports the following activities:
adult drug court implementation, single jurisdiction drug court enhancement, statewide drug court enhancement, and planning efforts.
The New York City Criminal Court, through the New York State Unified Court System, will utilize fiscal year 2008 Adult Drug Court Discretionary Grant funds to provide enhanced vocation and educational services to participants at the Brooklyn and Manhattan Drug Courts. Two counselors will be hired to accomplish this. It is anticipated that each counselor will open and staff an education and career center at their respective duty locations in order to provide employment counseling, educational testing, and development and school placement services. After assessing participants' work history and cognitive skills in relation to fulfilling state court mandates, the counselors will create a vocation/education plan for the participant with the ultimate goal of obtaining long-term, meaningful employment. It is anticipated that more than 500 participants at each project site would receive services within the grant funded period.
