The Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program is designed to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments in developing and establishing drug courts for substance-abusing adult and juvenile offenders. Drug court programs funded by the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program are required by law to target nonviolent offenders. The Program supports the following activities:
adult drug court implementation, single jurisdiction drug court enhancement, statewide drug court enhancement, and planning efforts.
The Rochester Drug Treatment Court, through the New York State Unified Court System, will apply fiscal year 2008 Adult Drug Court Discretionary Grant funds to expand existing services to include a veterans court. Through this specialized component, a team comprised of a newly hired resource coordinator and a veterans case manager, will help participants overcome readjustment issues such as post-traumatic stress, depression, and other anxiety disorders that may interfere with treatment outcomes. In addition, participants will also be evaluated for veteran's benefits including VA health care and educational and benefit packages that promote income stability. Training programs aimed at educating judicial professionals of the unique needs of the veteran community will also be developed and presented during the project period.
