Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $185,716)

The Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program is designed to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments in developing and establishing drug courts for substance-abusing adult and juvenile offenders. Drug court programs funded by the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program are required by law to target nonviolent offenders. The Program supports the following activities: adult drug court implementation, single jurisdiction drug court enhancement, statewide drug court enhancement, and planning efforts.

The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), Kentucky Drug Court Department (KDCD) will use the Fiscal Year (FY) 2008 Single Jurisdiction Drug Court Enhancement grant to develop a two-step initiative that will provide both intermediate and advanced training sessions for newly-employed and seasoned drug court team members. A conference will be held and used as stepping-stone toward the development of a train-the-trainer program. The program will provide continuing education for team members and develop courses for drug court academy participants. KDCD will use grant funds to: 1) provide new drug court team members with fundamental training sessions; 2) conduct in-depth training sessions for team members regarding statewide drug court program issues; 3) evaluate statewide training sessions; 4) provide recommendations for further course development of train-the trainer, statewide drug court academy, and advanced training for drug court staff; and 5) create an effective group of Kentucky drug court trainers to provide ongoing training and education for teams.
