Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $17,887)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The Pathways Inc. ALERT Regional Prevention Center (Center) will support their Early Intervention Project (EIP). The Center will provide multifaceted prevention and intervention services to youth involved in the criminal justice system due to an alcohol or other drug charge. The basic system of belief for the EIP is to expand agency collaboration through establishing and maintaining working relationships, and networking with providers and referral sources. The EIP also seeks to improve the functioning of the criminal justice system by providing court diversion services for young persons under 21, charged with their first or second alcohol or drug charge and identified as using or at risk for using illegal substances. The main goals of the program are to divert youth from further involvement with the juvenile justice system; reduce the recidivism rate of first and second time juvenile offenders; improve parent and child communication; and to reduce the number of youth who experience future alcohol and other drug problems.
